ECO COMMITTEE

At Sherborne Primary School we have an Eco committee, consisting of a representative from every class in the school. In the last few years, the eco committee have been extremely busy. Some of their activities include:

  • Fundraising for and acquiring a chicken coop and chickens

  • Selling eggs to staff

  • Running a juice bar

  • Try-a-new-fruit day

  • Design a garden competition (the flower beds are now completed at Pageant Gardens)

  • Tim Peake Space rocket challenge

  • Organising and helping with whole school Eco Day

  • Reducing electricity and water usage

  • Eco assemblies

  • Making recycled bird feeders and fat balls

  • Helping with the sensory garden

GREEN FLAG AWARD

In September 2021, Sherborne Primary School was again awarded Green Flag Award for excellence in the field of environmental activity by Eco Schools, a scheme which rewards and accredits schools who have made a commitment to improving their environmental performance.

PLASTIC-FREE SCHOOLS

In May 2022, Mrs Ellis and the eco committee worked tirelessly to achieve plastic-free status at Sherborne Primary School. We campaigned to ban plastic straws, wrappers, packaging, single-use plastics for school lunches etc. We’ve written to the government, local companies and had articles in the local media. The children have run assemblies and litter pick days, and involved the whole school and community in the campaign. They have an enormous sense of pride to have achieved this accolade for our school.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

To encourage wildlife there are many trees and hedges in the school grounds as well as bird feeders, bat box, hedgehog piles, and a luxurious bug hotel. Students take care of our Wildlife Area with pond, taking care not to disturb the numerous frogs, toads and newts. We do frequent litter picks to keep the school litter free.

Outdoor play is really important as taking part in outside activities reduces the amount of energy used, so students make good use of the Outdoor Classroom and school grounds. The cycle racks in school are well used, and pupils also participate in mile-a-day (every day) to promote fitness and concentration.

SUSTAINABILITY

Our school prides itself on a sustainable and green approach, from the paper used by staff, to the solar panels on the roof. The eco schools topics are integrated into the curriculum in a cross-curricular way, ensuring that our children grow up with a keen awareness of environmental issues.
